I had been doing yoga meditation for many years. I got the idea, though, that I should avoid deep meditation and be semi-aware at the more normal (everyday) level during the attunement. So I intended to be open, receptive, but made myself inwardly pretty quiet. This is my first attunement, I'm describing. The process was pleasant enough. It was when I left the room later that I realized something remarkable had happened. I felt this simplified awareness inside -- simplified in a positive sense. Sort of cleansed, polished. Nicely energized. Neat and tidy on the personal-awareness level. I found that a great deal of "old stuff" in my social-self was dispersed and dispelled. I had been mainly focussed on my transpersonal self, the deeper self, in my yoga meditation. The Reiki attunement brought a healing, burnishing action out through my deeper self in a very effective assistance of the more outward -- the emotional, rational, and maybe physical levels. Animals and people generally liked me better afterwards, I noticed. As time has gone on, I've felt more and more that my yoga practice and my Reiki practice have blended or interacted in a good way. I didn't feel anything other than a very bad headache, and felt no Reiki energy for a week or so after that. Actually felt cut off from God. It passed, and I have since been having warm fuzzies, have seen colors and have seen other interesting things. What is interesting is that I was attuned with a classmate that I didn't care too much for. I was at a Reiki circle with her yesterday, trying to be accepting of her, and damned if I didn't leave with a headache again. Lesson here, huh? I was 25, and he had just turned 31. Dan was new to being on disability for the AIDS diagnosis, and having a lot of complications due to the AZT medication. He had received a few Reiki treatments, learned classes were to be given, and begged me to attend. I made it perfectly clear to him that it would be a waste of my money and that they wouldn't teach me anything I didn 't already know. He didn't care and begged on, he really wanted me to attend the classes with him. I finally agreed. The Level 1 class was 3 days long. It began on a Friday, ending on Sunday. The teacher was directly in Takata's lineage and gave an incredible class. This instructor was a natural motivational speaker and everyone had a great time. After the final attunement and the end of the class, I was unimpressed. It was not different than anything I had experienced before, until what happened on Monday. I became ill. Getting sick was something that just didn't happen to me. Any time I had taken a sick day from work in the past was simply because I didn't want to go into the office. but this time I became so ill I could not get out of bed, and had to exert great effort simply to heat soup from a can. The headache I had was excruciating, and it felt like very sharp very hard needles were being thrust into me from all directions. Aspirin, Tylenol, Advil - nothing worked, nothing reduced the pain. I was sick, and the only temporary relief I found was in sleep. The Level 2 class was the following weekend, and oddly enough the symptoms eased off enough, allowing me to attend the first part Friday evening. The Level 2 class was only 2 days, and the 3rd day was invitational for anyone who wanted to attend and share experiences and trade Reiki. The first phase of the Level 2 attunement removed any and all symptoms I had remaining from the week, and I noticed something new. I didn't know what it was I was noticing, but something new was around me and I didn't know what it was. Saturday night gave us the second and final phase of the Level 2 attunement. It was a group attunement, with seven of us side by side in a line of chairs. The husband and wife team performing the attunements entered, said an invitational prayer, asked us to close our eyes, and began the process. The symbols were individually placed into each of our hands, and while our hands were in prayer position waiting for the leading Master to place her hands on our shoulders and let the formal attunement energies enter, I noticed everything in the room began to glow. The tables that had been placed against the wall to give us more space, the pedestal public speakers would use, the chalk board, the students in their respective chairs, The Chairs, and the attuning Reiki Masters. I had a perfect 360 degree view of the room with my eyes closed. Then preparations were made above my head, and hands were laid onto my shoulders. Suddenly I began to expand. The colors in the room intensified, my conscious mind began to expand like a large sphere might expand - in 360 degrees. Things kept expanding beyond the room. I remember seeing the wiring above the lights in the ceiling, expanding out beyond the building, and the expansion continued. I saw the previous group of attuned students with new brilliant light around them in the other room; I remember seeing a small family of squirrels in Golden Gate Park, and expanding beyond the city limits. The expansion continued and continued beyond the atmosphere, beyond the moon, the planets, the solar system and beyond. The expansion continued and I was simply surrounded by stars. It was beautiful and I swear, it was like I saw colors that have never been seen. It was beautiful beyond words and the energy remains indescribable. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever known. Then at some point the expansion slowed and gradually ceased. Someone else was with me, but I could not see this person. I grew a little puzzled probably because I began thinking about the experience. I remember thinking "what do I do now?" The response was simple and in soft tones: "You have a choice." "What?" I asked, "a choice of what?" "You may choose to continue from where you are now, or you may choose to return," the presence said. At that point I became instantly aware of things which even today I am just beginning to remember, and that knowledge allowed me to make the decision. "I want to help others before I make it this far," and with a great flash of lights I was suddenly back in the chair and the Reiki Master was removing her hands from my shoulders. Plus, the only person I could find to attune me acted pretty weird by the standards I was comfortable with at that time. (Hah! And I thought I knew from weird then!) Anyways, I just relaxed as best I could and followed directions (this teacher gave me permission to watch what she was doing) and while I don't recall feeling any specific sensations while it was taking place, and certainly didn't see any dazzling laser-light shows, when it was over I felt a slight tingle around the crown of my head and felt kind of woozy and uncoordinated, almost like being drunk, when I stood up. This persisted for a while and then faded away, and by several days later, I wasn't really sure whether those feelings were real or imagined. Later I came to look up a second teacher, and got similar, but much stronger feelings. But still no light shows, and I don't see auras or any of that other neat stuff that some people do. Yes, it did have an impact that was so strong, I still remember "realizations" that were made known to me then, instantly forgotten, only to be remembered now. In some ways its as if answers to a test were shown to me, hidden and then the test placed before me. The experience did change me as a person, and unfortunately it took a few years for many of those changes to integrate into the rest of me... and I'm quite sure there is a lot left over that hasn't made its way into my thick skull just yet. > Do you sometimes regret your decision to return? During late January of 2001 I began to re-establish a friendship/relationship that had a duration of 16 years. Each time in the past it ended in complete disaster and emotional pain and suffering for myself, and I lost everything I owned only to be rebuilt from nothing upwards. I let go of all of my belongings to return to the relationship, which involved moving 12 hours north of where I had been living the last 6 years. It involved quitting a well paid job ($50k/yr), and for whatever reasons I had the relationship was more important than money. I let go of everything, moving back into the relationship in May of 2001. By June I realized things were never meant to be... being called "stupid, dumb, illiterate, white trash, whore, prostitute," along having books and newspapers taken out of my hands while being read and being told "Steven, you are illiterate and too dumb to read, don't bother" became too much for me to bear any longer. I began a diary, recording all conversation almost immediately after it occurred. After two months I reviewed it and had the long overdue epiphany: "It's not me with the problem." Things were, however, quite miserable. I remained unemployed, and by December was very depressed. I had moved into a small trailer outside the house that was only about 15' x 20' in size with no working heat or water, which only complicated the depression. On the main sink area (which didn't work) I placed a butcher knife and looked at it every day. Every moment I looked at it I imagined how I might use it on myself. I had given notice that January 31st would be my last day no matter what: I would be out of that trailer and off property. Suicide was on the top of my mind. During one of my what is best called "Suicide Meditations" a powerful entity surrounded me, and reminded me of many spiritual experiences. January 31st arrived, my car was packed, and I drove to San Francisco only to sleep in my car for several weeks. By March 2002 the Homeless Veterans services placed me in a shelter, and just a few days later the car was turned over for repossession. Excluding the clothing I was wearing, I lost everything. Shortly thereafter, metaphorically speaking, I jumped off the cliff to see where the wind would blow me. Maybe I would splatter on the ground, maybe a gust of wind would propel me somewhere else. In the last few months I have seen a spirit light in my home seen Orbs and a Spirit/ghost and recently as I was lighting a candle I became aware for a second or 2 of a little fairy at hovering at my side.
