I believe that once you're attuned to Reiki then *any* symbol will push the energy in a particular direction without you having to be specifically 'attuned' to it... so if you have access to a Karuna Ki manual then use the symbols and see what they do; meditate on the symbols by sticking them up in the air above you and bathing in energy which you imagine cascades onto you from the symbol above you. Usui didn't attune anyone to any symbols: they were just provided as a way of connecting you to a particular aspect of energy. And if you are thoroughly familiar with an energy - this takes time - then you can move beyond a symbol to access the energy it represents direct.
