I visited the page. Fascinating reading. James, I wonder whether you may know if or where Jison Sensei may fit into the picture. He was regarded as a highly effective Japanese energy healer (used hands, on and off the body) who travelled to the U.S. and possibly some other parts of the West in the late 1970s. It is possible his art developed as an offshoot of the Japanese Reiki movement. Jison Sensei demonstrated his art mostly (but not entirely) among Japanese-Americans and among Japanese who were temporarily resident in the U.S. He had students living in the U.S. From reports, his healing efforts frequently produced dramatic and very tangible results. In Japan, Jison offered a meditation-based healer-development process. He had wanted to establish intensive training centres in North America, but I have been unable to learn whether his wish in this respect materialized. Any info on this person and his activities? Thanks. Other than that, I am unaware of him or the form of healing he worked with. Is there a specific reason you say his art might have been a Reiki offshoot? There are, afterall, numerous other unrelated forms of te-ate (hand-healing systems) in Japan. Reiki Love, Light & Fire James P.S. You mentioned in that post that Jison Sensei 'lived as a monk in Japan in a mountain temple' well, one thing I do know is that 'Jison' is a name often adopted by Zen Monks. ###### From: xwoodvine@netidea.com (Joel) Newsgroups: alt.healing.reiki Subject: Re: 'ORIGINAL' REIKI INFORMATION - THE SOURCES... I just indulged in a bit of "after which therefore because of which" speculation -- since Usui is regarded by some Japanese people as the reviver of hand-oriented energy healing in 20th century Japan. There are quite a few references to Jison Sensei (observation of healing sessions and results, overheard conversations among himself and his students, discussions with his students, etc) in the American author Doug Boyd's book about the Native-American shaman Wallace 'Mad Bear' Anderson. That book was published in the mid '90s, but much of the content is drawn from the period 1970-80. The thing is that 'teate' systems had long existed (and continue to exist) with in the martial disciplines, for example: the various schools of Ninpo (Ninjitsu) and traditional Bujutsu schools such as Katori Shinto Ryu, and I believe, Yagyu Ryu - the Jujutsu/Kenjutsu discipline said to have been studied by Usui Sensei. Also, Traditional Japanese Medicine (essentially Traditional Chinese Medicine with a name-change) included 'Ki-jutsu' ('Ki Ko') techniques (- originally derived from Qi Gung Hand Healing) . Then, there were (even in Usui's day) countless 'folk practitioners' - including members of the supposedly supressed Shugendo cults, who utilised hand-healing (admittedly in conjunction with exorcism, prayer and other esoteric practices) . And a great many of the 'new religions' existing in Usui's time, (several of which still exist today) were essentially 'healing sects', having grown up around a charismatic 'founder' who had developed or received healing powers.
