For those not familar with the palm pilot, it's a handheld electronic organizer that takes input by stylus-based character recognition instead of a keyboard. Someone has written a fairly decent (albeit limited) C compiler for it. So I'm looking for the smallest, most basic version of vi/vim (the C source code, anyway) that is still reasonably functional. I'm up to doing some limited work with it to deal with the differences resulting from the palm pilot (all the input routines, for example, would have to be changed), but I'm hoping to find the basic functionality because I lack both the time and the ability to program something of that magnitude from scratch. Any pointers and/or advice? -- Jeff Vinocur * jeff@foad.org Everybody already knows that I *am* a snooty Brit. --Alistair J. R. Well, I've heard rumours of Linux booting on one of those things (see poultry), so you've got very little work left to do :-) : So I'm looking for the smallest, most basic version of vi/vim Ha! A "small" version of vim! Seriously, would vi really be that useable on a Pilot? The editor becomes so deeply embedded in a touch typist's tactile memory that the commands begin to feel subconscious; having to write something like "jf,dB" with a stylus would surely feel awkward. Sven Guckes' homepage has a reasonable list of vi clones, none of which seem totally suitable. Perhaps you'd be best grabbing nvi and stripping it down considerably.
