Where: the University of Denver Computing Center. Outside the computer room (Burroughs B6700) was a user area with keypunchs, a self-service card reader, and a printer. The card reader and printer were "associated" (PA SPO command) so that jobs submitted on one were printed on the other. There was an "I/O window" where users could summon an operator from the depths of the computer room. One of the programmers, Woody Moore (I don't think he'll mind my mentioning his name) wrote instructions for the card reader. I still have them, and I think they're worth sharing. First, some explanation: the tensioned slider that pushed the cards from the feed trough into the reader is the "sliding do-dad," and holes on the slider fit onto three prongs at the reader mouth; these prongs form the "three-horned narnie." The sliding do-dad and the three-horned narnie were clearly labeled. Woody's text follows, with only minor typos corrected. I have changed "three-horned-narnie" to "three-horned narnie" because I think it reads better. DO-IT-YOURSELF COMPUTING HOW TO USE THE SELF-SERVICE READER: 1) Remove all rubber bands, staples, and spindles from your deck. 2) Carefully slide the sliding do-dad gently out of the way. 3) Put your deck between the sliding do-dad and the three-horned narnie. 4) Carefully slide the sliding do-dad gently back to support your deck. 5) Depress the START button (to the right and up). 6) Wait patiently until all of your cards are in the upper trough. (The reader will shut itself off so do not push the OFF button or you will upset the three-horned narnie and that could be fatal.) 7) Remove your cards from the upper trough. 8) Go to the printer and wait quietly for your job to be printed. WHAT TO DO IF YOU MADE THE THREE-HORNED NARNIE MAD: READ CHECK light on: 1) Remove last card from the upper trough. 2) Look at it. 3) If it is bent, mutilated, spindled, etc., make a new card. 4) Insert card in front of cards in lower trough. 5) Press the RESET button. 6) Press the START button. FEED CHECK light on: 1) Reposition your cards that are in the lower trough (make sure that all cards are in the trough and not stuck inside the three-horned narnie's mouth). 2) Press the RESET button. 3) Press the START button. Both READ CHECK and FEED CHECK lights on: 1) Remove last two cards from upper trough. 2) Look at them. 3) If they are bent, mutilated, spindled, etc., make new cards. 4) Insert cards in front of cards in lower trough. 5) Press the RESET button. 6) Press the START button. Cards not read for long periods of time (1 minute) and no lights come on or none of the above works -- go the the I/O window and explain your problem in ten words or less.
