Does anyone know a source for NE-17 (newer designation B5A) neon lamps? Chicago Miniature Lighting lists the lamps in their catalog, but none of the distributors carries it. They don't respond to inquiry, probably because of the small quantity involved. I have about 10 broken lamps, and a few others cracked. I'd buy a 100 lot if I had to in order to complete the console. http://home.nc.rr.com/deh/GALLERY/705A.JPG Thanks for any leads, Dan ###### From: iMeowbot Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Mail-Copies-To: nobody Subject: Re: IBM 705 lamps Organization: uJane References: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit User-Agent: MT-NewsWatcher/3.3b1 (PPC Mac OS X) X-Meow: Wouf X-No-Repost: yes Injector-Info: http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/Tarantula_20injector X-Face: ')Fflcs!^R}Ds420ESFBO$}^v}i=A9jhnT\3.x#V)XnBrjF8FDwO).{#sN<#bI#A0Y-IU>I iz^}DhL#8nvP8,Ef*_4tdZUl#gwDK=7]>l"53tML>J1S8!)4vsDuy8j0]Rx Message-ID: Lines: 19 Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2003 22:48:26 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 151.199.44.141 X-Complaints-To: abuse@verizon.net X-Trace: nwrdny01.gnilink.net 1065566906 151.199.44.141 (Tue, 07 Oct 2003 18:48:26 EDT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2003 18:48:26 EDT Path: redlance.franklin.ch!pfaff2.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!switch.ch!solnet.ch!solnet.ch!newspeer1.nwr.nac.net!in.100proofnews.com!in.100proofnews.com!cycny01.gnilink.net!cyclone1.gnilink.net!spamkiller2.gnilink.net!nwrdny01.gnilink.net.POSTED!53ab2750!not-for-mail Xref: redlance.franklin.ch alt.folklore.computers:152977 In article , "Daniel House" wrote: > I'm restoring an IBM 705 operator console. Form factor, resistor and wattage are the same. Nominal voltage is slightly lower, but still within typical AC range. ###### Message-ID: <3F8351C3.842F53D0@yahoo.com> From: Peter Flass X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.75 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: IBM 705 lamps References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 6 Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2003 23:51:10 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 24.194.50.82 X-Complaints-To: abuse@rr.com X-Trace: twister.nyroc.rr.com 1065570670 24.194.50.82 (Tue, 07 Oct 2003 19:51:10 EDT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2003 19:51:10 EDT Organization: Road Runner Path: redlance.franklin.ch!pfaff2.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!switch.ch!news.imp.ch!news.imp.ch!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!newsfeed.frii.net!newsfeed.frii.net!140.99.99.194.MISMATCH!newsfeed1.easynews.com!easynews.com!easynews!news-west.rr.com!news.rr.com!news-rtr.nyroc.rr.com!news-out.nyroc.rr.com!twister.nyroc.rr.com.POSTED!53ab2750!not-for-mail Xref: redlance.franklin.ch alt.folklore.computers:152994 Daniel House wrote: > > I'm restoring an IBM 705 operator console. The specs are 7500 min. operating hours, 30K series resistance required for 105V -> 125V operation, DC bayonet base, T-41/2 bulb, 2mA nom. operating current, 1/4W nom. output. Fortunately, the NE-17/B5A doesn't appear to be one of those neons whose dark effect is compensated for by radioactive additives. I've had good luck getting oddball Chicago Miniature incandescents to re-lamp the Rhode Island Computer Museum's PDP-9 from Mouser Electronics (www.mouser.com), and they stock CM neons, too. I happened to have Mouser's Nov '01 -> Jan 02 catalog nearby, and they list CM's NE-21/B6A, which looks to be just about the same thing as an NE-17/B5A from the limited description in Mouser's catalog, although it may be an SC bayonet. In which case you might consider trying CM's NE-48/B9A, which looks like an NE-21 in a DC bayonet. I've no idea if either of these two neons will do for you, and you might inquire of CM as to what's what, but if they were in Mouser's catalog 18 months ago (and may still be - the newest catalog is buried deep in the pile...) they're probably still in production. I hope to relight these lamps someday, just to see it, so I want to find the DC bayonets. The NE-48/B9A on the other hand is looking like a good candidate (thanks also to iMeowbot for pointing that out). Unfortunately the latest Mouser catalog doesn't list it and I don't see it available on my std other sources, nor a Google search. I've used Chicago Mini's "product search" to locate any known stocks and fired off a few emails to those (there aren't many), so I'll see what happens. Thanks for the great stats/help! You could take the bulb out of the SC base, and rewire it into a DC base. The solder part shouldn't be too hard, though finding the right cement to hold it in might be harder. -- glen ###### From: "Geoffrey G.
