On Saturday, I was at college, and I picked up my E-mail from my home account through the WebMail interface. I have friend in China, and her E-mail has a garbled From (probably Chinese but it looks garbled on my system). Because of that, I usually open all of my E-mail to be sure. One of these pieces was spam with inline porn pictures. I clicked on Back, went to click on the checkbox to select the message for deletion, and stopped as I noted the message size right beside the checkbox. It said "5 KB". I was immediately wondering how all that fit in 5 KB. I then deleted the message, and almost immediately regretted doing so, because now, I will not be able to find out how the pictures were compressed so small. There were probably linkages in the message, which was probably in html. The whole process allowed the porn site to capture your location, confirm a hit, etc. You should not allow html e-mail, nor automatic image expansion and/or downloading (you can still do these things on command). Secondly, postpone all message reading until after you are off-line, so there is no outside connection available. -- Chuck F (cbfalconer@yahoo.com) (cbfalconer@worldnet.att.net) Available for consulting/temporary embedded and systems. As other people have said it was a HTML file. There was an interesting case in Australia recently where someone was fired for having pornography in their email folders which was a unread HTML porn spam (they won the case on appeal). The WebMail system does use HTML. My home system (using Eudora) does not, and I never get the stuff at home . Now that I have deleted the message, I will not know for sure. Well, it is not as if it is not going to happen again soon. Great, just great! Now, I am looking forward to the next porn that I get sent. Argh!
