I remember reading that post on the C-MU CS bulletin boards. Five or so years afterward when the Internet was starting to catch fire, I told someone that I thought Scott Fahlman was the inventor of the ASCII Smiley, and they wouldn't believe me. I don't know who that was, but In the decade and a half since, I eventually convinced myself that he/she must've been right, and that I had imagined the whole thing. It's nice to know that SOME of the things I remember actually DID happen. -- Foo! ###### Message-ID: <3D82E579.E3911081@bellsouth.net> From: "Rostyslaw J. What's the importance of old TOPS10 software to society compared to the: smiley, frowney, and other emoticons. :))) ###### Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Smiliy - 20 years old on Thursday:-) References: From: Ric Werme X-Newsreader: NN version 6.5.0 CURRENT #123 Lines: 30 Message-ID: <_d1h9.434780$me6.49874@sccrnsc01> NNTP-Posting-Host: 24.128.108.156 X-Complaints-To: abuse@attbi.com X-Trace: sccrnsc01 1032101882 24.128.108.156 (Sun, 15 Sep 2002 14:58:02 GMT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 14:58:02 GMT Organization: AT&T Broadband Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 14:58:02 GMT Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.imp.ch!news.imp.ch!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!logbridge.uoregon.edu!arclight.uoregon.edu!enews.sgi.com!sdd.hp.com!usc.edu!attla2!ip.att.net!attbi_feed3!attbi_feed4!attbi.com!sccrnsc01.POSTED!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.folklore.computers:116672 jmfbahciv@aol.com writes: >In article , aek@spies.com (Al Kossow) wrote: >>From article , by >andrew@cucumber.demon.co.uk (Andrew Gabriel): >>> First ever smiley found, preserved for posterity... >> >>Nice to see CMU is willing to search their archives for >>this bit of fluff, but not for TOPS10 TCP or the S-1 stuff they had. >> >Not unexpected, though. (Sorry, Ric.) No problem to me (well, I _did_ want to be the one to start this thread), I left C-MU before the Internet protocols were invented and old PDP-10 code for the ARPAnet protocols is not all that interesting. Some of the techniques might be (e.g. Telnet at interrupt level) might be, but not terribly relevant to today's systems and could be readily recreated without referring to the old code. I do have a paper listing of my FTP in BLISS, I'll send you a copy of it if you promise to treasure it forever! I believe people did mount a substantial search for the PDP-10 Internet code but the tapes were unreadable. -Ric -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
