Most likely a bit less: Murder is taking away a life. Assuming that to be average 40 years (life expectancy assumed 80 years) * 365.25 days/year * 24h/day that gives 350640 hours/life. > slowly by increasing the stress level with more and more installs > of Win/xx or Word or Excel. Just count all the lost time (all of it: waiting for slowed down computers, re-working after crashes, fixing crash inducers, re-installing, recovering from using it, jumping job to get out, retraining new person, psychiatrist visits). Multiply the average time/person/year by the amount of people suffering it. Makes IMHO 1(0)000s of lives/year. Not quite the 10mio/year of Hitlers politics and war, but definitely in mass murder territory. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Hacker, Unix Guru, El Eng FH/BSc, Sysadmin, Roleplayer, LARPer, Mystic ###### From: QSB@QRM-QRN.net (Allodoxaphobia) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Massive windows waisting time (was Re: StarOffice for free) References: <3aaf47a9.28207387@news.cableinet.co.uk> <983402113snz@dsl.co.uk> <3A9F0070.28CB2285@ev1.net> <1937.461T1700T5435093@sky.bus.com> <3AA08500.26E00CD6@ev1.net> <6ud7byee7r.fsf_-_@chonsp.franklin.ch> Reply-To: If You Reply Message-ID: User-Agent: slrn/0.9.6.2 (Linux) Date: 03 Mar 2001 22:31:31 GMT Lines: 22 NNTP-Posting-Host: 63.105.232.12 X-Trace: reader3.news.uu.net 983658691 8574 63.105.232.12 Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news-fra1.dfn.de!news.tele.dk!209.50.235.254!europa.netcrusader.net!63.208.208.143!feed2.onemain.com!feed1.onemain.com!uunet!dca.uu.net!ash.uu.net!spool0.news.uu.net!reader3.news.uu.net!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.folklore.computers:76283 >Charles Richmond writes: > >> Charlie Gibbs wrote: >> > >> > In article <3A9F0070.28CB2285@ev1.net> richmond@ev1.net >> > (Charles Richmond) writes: >> > >> > >With EDLIN, Microsoft should be paying *you* for the aggrivation >> > >factor!!! >> > >> > Why stop at EDLIN? He's a businessman, pure and simple (well, not pure), and a good role model in that respect. The problem is that, unlike businessmen in it for the money (who want to be your first choice), he's in it only for the power (he wants to be your *only* choice). He wouldn't have made such powerful moneymakers as Internet Exploder and Windoze Media Playerhater free (gratis) if he was in it for the money or was not in it for the power. He's not out to kill anyone per se. He doesn't care, but that's not his goal. His goal is to position Microsoft Corp. as the de facto dictator of the world. (AOHell is trying to do the same thing, but the difference is that they don't have as strong a leader.) The difference between Gates and Hitler is that Gates isn't intentionally out to eliminate any one group in particular. He wants to give everyone equal Windoze. More like a 1984 or Fahrenheit 451 future. He wants power, not profits. When Win98 was launched here in Sweden, some genious at the MS marketing dept. came up with the idea of using pharmaceuticals as the basis for the ads. Suddenly there were tons of posters with pictures of pills and medical containers labeled "Windows 98" combined with slogans like "remedy for head ache". Also, some ads featured prescriptions (*) forms that had been "filled" by som MS M.D. stating something similar about cure for head ache and general slowness/dizzyness. Now, these Win98 are supposed to cure what? Ah, their own previous product - Win95! So they admit of producing stuff people find annoying, hard to use, unreliable and generally irritating?! (*) At least here the prescriptions contain mandatory fields where the MD have to include any side effects that can be caused by the prescription. I pointed this out to an MS rep and suggested "may cause chest pains, ulcers etc". No takers though... ,-) -- Cheers! But of course. Their latest product is always the greatest thing since sliced bread - until their next product comes out, at which time the formerly great product becomes a piece of garbage, unfit for human consumption. Microsoft only wants you to be happy with their product until the next one comes along, at which point they want you to feel a dissatisfaction that can only be cured by buying their next product. Thus are lusers led down the path of continual forced upgrades. >When Win98 was launched here in Sweden, some genious at the MS >marketing dept. came up with the idea of using pharmaceuticals >as the basis for the ads. Ah, their own previous >product - Win95! So they admit of producing stuff people find >annoying, hard to use, unreliable and generally irritating?! Yes they do, but only after they've come up with a new, "improved" version. I saw a few local billboards advertising Win98 a while ago, and when you cut through the hype, what they basically said was that 98 will crash less often than 95. Some endorsement. Let's see, if they really were a pharmaceutical company, that would be like saying that their new drug has only half as many nauseating side effects as the old one. >(*) At least here the prescriptions contain mandatory fields where >the MD have to include any side effects that can be caused by the >prescription. About the same time as Windows NT 4.0 was released, I think. Besides, I have more than enough native software lying about to do what I want. StarOffice in particular has proven to be a very useful package, and the older native copy of Communicator I use is still viable (I can even use Z! to do streaming MP3 stuff when I need it). I run Warp 4, NT 4, BeOS 5, and Linux (Mandrake 6.1) on my main four PPros and flip back and forth freely via a Belkin KVM switch, so I spend quite a bit of time in each, and I'll still take my slightly-dated-but-very-stable OS/2 environment over any of the others, at least right now. OS/2 fits the way I do things, and I think it's a shame that it's not a lot more well-known than it is. Most people either haven't heard of it or think it's some type of mainframe OS. Yeah, right. :-) >Or like fools for having trusted IBM again and again and again? I trusted IBM twice -- when I finally moved over to OS/2 2.1 fulltime from my old Windows 3.1 + WinTools setup (IBM held up its end), and then when I moved to Warp 3 (when IBM had a shot at dethroning Win95 and blew it, but still actively supported their software). By the time I got to Warp 4, I didn't care about IBM so much anymore ( I'd learned my lesson with Warp 3 ). To their credit, IBM *has* released a large number of FixPaks for the product as freebies. 15 now, I think. >Just a guess: Did you buy MCA bus and lay token ring cabling too? > > We're talking about Warp 4 here, me lad, not OS/2 1.x... :-) I *do* have a couple of true blue IBM IntelliStations, yes, but they are PCI/ISA boxes using 100BaseTX ethernet, and neither one runs OS/2. -- -Rich Steiner >>>---> rsteiner@visi.com >>>---> Eden Prairie, MN Written online using slrn 0.9.5.4! In addition, Software Choice subscribers have recently received a "Merlin Convenience Pack" which facilitates installation of OS/2 afresh, since it incorporates all the fix-packs PLUS a number of upgrades (notably the V4.51 kernel from Warp Server for e-Business, the Journalling File System and Logical Volume Manager, and the v4.3 of TCP/IP) onto a single CD. Since ODIN now allows a large proportion of "32-bit Windows only" software to run under OS/2, and with StarOffice equally as capable as M$'s expensive product, there's no need to suffer the instability of M$ products. -- Brian {Hamilton Kelly} bhk@dsl.co.uk "We have gone from a world of concentrated knowledge and wisdom to one of distributed ignorance. My two cards have both worked quite well in an RS/6000 7012-360, and the P/390 moved to a 7009-C10 without any complaint at all. Just plug it in and it works.
