It showed an ASCII picture of the Enterprise sitting on the left hand side of the screen, and some trouble (Klingons?) on the right hand side. Using VT100 cursor control codes (and I presume a lot of padding), it was animated with captions and all. It ended with the Enterprise firing Photon Torpedoes at whatever the "trouble" was, and a big explosion. Anyone got a copy they could send me? It would fit in quite nicely with a debate I anticipate having about the use of HTML email and oversized .sigs.... I don't think line-at-a-time buffering will work very well on animations, and looping seems like a bad way to do the delays. May I suggest the C program reproduced below? Given that the Linux console appears as an TTY (/dev/tty*) you could use the normal "set baudrate" ioctl() options to control how long it should take per character. I wonder if this project has enough hack value that Linus will allow it into the standerd kernel. Anyone who wants to disable it can simly set 115200bit/s. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Nerd, Geek, Hacker, Unix Guru, Sysadmin, Roleplayer, LARPer, Mystic ###### From: abuse@cabal.org.uk (Peter Corlett) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: The "Star Trek" email (for VT100) Date: 23 Sep 2000 11:08:12 GMT Organization: None Lines: 24 Message-ID: <8qi2us$kio$1@vindaloo.cabal.org.uk> References: <1357.269T752T8473873@sky.bus.com> <663.276T756T10134173@sky.bus.com> <6ug0msw2ez.fsf@chonsp.franklin.ch> NNTP-Posting-Host: modem-69.andunie.dialup.pol.co.uk X-Trace: news7.svr.pol.co.uk 969708212 8497 62.136.109.69 (23 Sep 2000 11:23:32 GMT) NNTP-Posting-Date: 23 Sep 2000 11:23:32 GMT X-Complaints-To: abuse@theplanet.net X-Newsreader: trn 4.0-test72 (19 April 1999) Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!newsfeed-zh.ip-plus.net!news.ip-plus.net!news.tesion.net!news.belwue.de!news-stu1.dfn.de!news-koe1.dfn.de!news.ruhrgebiet.individual.net!newsfeed.ision.net!ision!diablo.theplanet.net!news.theplanet.net!newspost.theplanet.net!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.folklore.computers:64544 Neil Franklin wrote: > benc@krustbustr.benzone.org (Ben Clifford) writes: [...] >> I once toyed with the idea of making a wee linux kernel patch to give you >> a "slow terminal" - maybe even with ANSI colour changing pauses which >> were very noticable at 300baud... > Given that the Linux console appears as an TTY (/dev/tty*) you could use > the normal "set baudrate" ioctl() options to control how long it should > take per character. > I wonder if this project has enough hack value that Linus will allow it > into the standerd kernel. On Debian, my console is set to 38400 baud, and I'd rather it not be throttled to that. It's probably better to put a flag in /proc to enable it ("echo 1 >/proc/sys/vga/baud_hack" or something). I've got a co-located Linux box at my ISP that uses a serial console. I can log into another box, bring up Kermit, and get at the LILO prompt if need be. (More usefully, the fsck prompts if I've got disk problems.) So far, I still have to phone the ISP to reboot it...
