Not just its IO.  A lot of things about the PDP-8 were examples
of elegant simplicity.  Other DEC machines (-10 & -11) were easier
to get work done on, but the PDP-8 stands out for just how much
useful work could be done with a minimalist design.  (RISC at its best?) 

The IO system did stand out in how easy it was to build interfaces for,
making it a great machine for lab work.
