I just received an ADM-3a terminal, without the lower case expansion kit (damn!) As I understand it the kit consists of an EPROM chip and that's it ? Does anybody have any extra chips or any hints/tips on how to get one ? (I could burn one if I had the code...) It's a nice terminal and in excellent shape, I also have an ADM5 and the keyboard on the -3 is so much nicer.. -- Jarkko Teppo jate@uwasa.fi ###### From: tsw@johana.com (Tom Watson) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: ADM-3a lower case EPROM ? If I remember it correctly... (I haven't gone out to the loft in my garage and looked...) The ADM-3a lower case "kit" consists of 2 2102 static ram chips (to store the lower case data), and a MASK programmed rom. I was told (don't have the schematic in front of me, it is in the garage as well) that the address bits to the lower case chip uses INVERTED levels. The outputs form characters in the 5x7 matrix that the terminal uses. To get the "decender" effect, all lower case letters are raised up one bit vertically, and the "decenders" of the characters that decend (y, j, g, p, and q) use the last display row. It looks better than no decenders at all, or something silly like "mini-caps" that I've seen on other lower case terminals. Some fancy wiring from the socket to an 8 address input rom (256 bytes) and some programming should yield a reasonable result. The pinouts don't conform to a "standard" chip like a 2716, so jumpers and "blue wires" are in order. Good luck. p.s. Don't forget to switch on the configuration switch that allows display of lower case. -- Tom Watson Generic short signature tsw@johana.com
