I have taken in a lot of equipment (thougth I have never had disk drives in such bad shape). and had to clean them in a similar fashion. I once bought equipment from a guy up in west covina, ca. the entire yard full of computer equipment was open to the sky. you figure how things got so clean looking when you bought from him. If you dry out terminals completely they work and look a lot better after a good hose down. The system he shows is a Microdata Reality system. The drives are 300mb Memorex top loading 10 platter disks drives. The controller for the disks was made by a system house called MSC, which sold a controller for various disk drives, such as the memorex drives. They would then sell drivers and adapters for various mini systems such as the microdata. The microdata systems of the time used 10mb (5mb removable over 5 fixed) disks, or soon after a 50mb winchester technology drive, both of Microdata manufacture. The tape drive in the picture is an 800bpi 25ips 1/2 inch 9 track drives. This particular system appears to have an expansion chassis, which means it was a 64K core system with 4 or more 8 way controllers. This system maxed out at 32 users on 64k until later upgrades raised the user load to 48 users, and 128K memory. ###### From: Charles Eicher Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: MicroData 1600, I got it !! Yes, of course I read the caption, otherwise how would I have known you washed it out with a hose and soap? I'm really skeptical that you could ever get a large, complex mini like this to ever function after immersion in water. There are industrial solvents that are often used for this purpose, solvents that remove the gunk but don't damage electronic components, plastics, or even fabric insulation. Its sort of like "dry cleaning" for hardware. Of course, it would probably cost a small fortune to buy enough solvent.. ###### Message-ID: <38C8D9D7.4A3C709C@trailing-edge.com> Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 11:17:43 -0400 From: Tim Shoppa Organization: Trailing Edge Technology X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.03Gold (X11; I; OpenVMS V7.0 DEC 3000 Model 300L) MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: MicroData 1600, I got it !! A common technique among minicomputer collectors (wander over to alt.sys.pdp8 or vmsnet.pdp-11 for examples) is to put the cards and backplanes in a dishwasher. Those who are nitpicky might give a final rinse in deionized water or isopropyl alcholol. Mechanical parts like switches and some sockets may indeed require some special attention, especially if they were hand assembled onto the boards (as is likely for a mini from the 60's or early 70's). Most modern (as in 1970's onwards) electromechanical parts were designed from the start for wave soldering and immersion defluxing, and probably won't mind a water bath too badly (even if the original seals may not be in place anymore). I emailed the guy special instructions on cleaning up the ways on this drive. didn't mean to deride your post in any way charles, sorry, I really like old microdatas and have encountered them in this shape (though my case was mouse poop, not bird crap). I also didn't take the water hose approach, I just appreciate it. Jim
