Two major trends are behind these numbers. First is the rapid expansion of xDSL and cable Internet access, which encourages people to transfer larger files. Second is MPEG audio, which filtered into the public consciousness within the past year or so, giving said lusers something to do with all that bandwidth when they're all pr0n'd out. Why is Usenet popular as an alternative to FTP and HTTP for distributing MP3 files? ISPs will let you waste all that bandwidth and post reams of copyright violations if it's done on Usenet, but heads roll if it's placed on a Web or FTP server. ###### From: mrr@foo.eunet.no (Morten Reistad) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: growth of usenet news feed Date: 4 Feb 2000 00:16:12 GMT Organization: EUnet Lines: 35 Message-ID: <87d5oc$d0p$1@oslo-nntp.eunet.no> References: <389539ac.67584815@news.tesco.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: www.reistad.priv.no X-Trace: oslo-nntp.eunet.no 949623372 13337 193.71.26.162 (4 Feb 2000 00:16:12 GMT) X-Complaints-To: newsmaster@eunet.no NNTP-Posting-Date: 4 Feb 2000 00:16:12 GMT X-Newsreader: trn 4.0-test69 (20 September 1998) Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!newsfeed-zh.ip-plus.net!news.ip-plus.net!news.datacomm.ch!newscore.gigabell.net!newsfeed00.sul.t-online.de!t-online.de!news-MUC.ecrc.net!news-FFM2.ecrc.net!uio.no!Norway.EU.net!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.folklore.computers:49092 In article , Bruce Hoult wrote: >In article , >meowing@banet.net (Extra Crispy Fluffy) wrote: > >> [evans_the_swim@dontbothermewithspam.tesco.net] >> > Just wondering - last time I heard an estimate of the daily full news >> > feed it was about 10 gigs. The non-porn, non-warez parts of usenet seemed to level off from the exponential growth curve sometime around two years ago. It was a straight exponential curve before that; doubling rates went from 7 to 13 months in cycles. I have observed since early 1986, when I first got involved with administering usenet. After jan-feb 1998 usenet has gone to a 4-5 year doubling rate almost overnight; like one of those demand shifts we learned about in college economics. Are there any major changes in this pattern now; or is it just another binaries-bombing ?
