I don't understand why they're so popular. I am NOT questioning porn in itself, rather, I'm questioning the use of the Internet to get it as opposed to traditional means. The biggest thing I don't get is the lack of anonyminity. You go into the back part of a newstand and pay cash--there's no record or audit trail of your transaction. But on the internet you give your credit card which registers your name, where it could come back to haunt you. Secondly, the Internet is more expensive. The adult sites claim to be free, but then all want some sort of sleazy "adult check". These hit your credit card with a steep fee every month, and I can't help but suspect that they take a long time to stop billing when you ask them to. And I wonder if there are cheats out there who take money but give nothing, knowing that the victim probably won't want to make a stink and call attention to the transaction. Third, isn't the quality of a printed page a lot nicer than a fuzzy image on a computer screen? Plus, the printed page can be taken anywhere and hidden, while computer images can be found (and lots of people have been embarassed and in deep trouble when their PC porn collection was accidently discovered.) ###### From: greywnospam@hotmail.com (Grey Wolf) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Internet porn--WHY? Nobody actually *sees* you purchase porn on the web, unlike going to an "adult" bookstore (where the paranoid worry that someone might see them going in or coming out, or notice their car parked outside) and actually having a person ring up your purchase. ###### From: Kin Hoong CHUNG Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Internet porn--WHY? For example, one site (Fhmr - put that through rot13 if you like) has pics that look a lot like they were scanned straight from slides with professional equipment (almost PhotoCD-level quality.) This happens most likely less often than with paper. Simply the volume and the means needed to access it makes this the case. And then add the unique computer/Internet advantages to offset what remains of the disadvantages: Access: try finding an specialist porn shop (particularly outside the US). Porn sites are one click away from your favourite search engine. Selection: magazines are "push" technology, every months editors selection of what hopefully sells, aimed at the widest marketable taste. Internet/Web is "pull" technology, enter your personal search criteria and then surf your interests. Life: magazine are pros, doing it for money. Internet/Web offers self published amateurs who do it for the fun or exhibition. With other words: the general Internet over paper advantages. This group is mainly old days computer people, the majority of them techno-explorers by heart. With all the hoolaboo about Internet port a few years ago I would expect quite a few to have gone to see it for themselves (rather than rely on journalists). And the "there exists no porn" cries of old Internet timers did not fit my "Internet has everything" conviction. > I learned more than I > really want to know about on-line smut. So did I then. We had only had had private television (and the sex magazines on them) since about 5 years. Those were already an eye opener (what, people _really_ do such things with each other?). Then I surfed and found the net stuff and noticed that the stuff on TV was tame in comparison to the world out there. Also the TV stuff became repetitive (90% BDSM and leather/latex stuff that attracts a wide public for the adverts) with the few unusual (and so interesting) things to discover in between. The search and click on the Web is simply better :-). Oh, and no adverts on the Net (I auto-kill banners). I would find it very surprising if I found porn sites that had anything more than banner ads linking to other banner ad sites, and of course using JavaScript to pop up endless numbers of banner ad windows. This is probably the inflation you're talking about. And since MSIE has no "Exit" function you can use to close all your browser windows at once, MSIE people need to be quick to get rid of everything. And, of course, they ask for adult check stuff only after filling your screen with tiny but explicit banner ads. Anyone ever seen an animated GIF used as "sample streaming video"? I don't give my credit card number to people who do stuff like that. But I imagine some people will give out their credit card to anyone. I imagine psychic readings aren't free either, but I don't know exactly what scam they use to extract money. I remember the old "make a toll 800 number" one, which should have been illegal before it had even been tried, and there was the "800 number is a 10-minute ad for the 900 number" one too, but that's just tacky as hell. They can't be using the charge-and-run tactic because people dumb enough to call psychic phone lines don't see any social stigma in crying out to the world that their psychic told them their redneck boyfriend loves them and isn't cheating on anybody and that they will win the lottery in a year with a "9" or a "2" in it. -- Nick Bensema UIN: 2135445 This ~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ signature wastes What I did here would have been rebellious in 1993. --> bandwidth. ###### From: offsite@pagecster.com (Serial # 19781010) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Internet porn--WHY? Odd; "squick" is a fairly commonly used word in certain circles, but there's nothing in the remotest degree ULish about it. If something squicks you, it revolts you or turns you off, as in, say, being peed upon by your partner. It is used in relation to matters sexual and otherwise related, vaguely or otherwise to sex. To squick someone is to cause such a feeling of revusion. So, you can squick someone; you can be squicked, and a squick is something that squicks you. By derivation, "squicking" would be causing someone to become squicked. Nothing UL-related involved unless you happen to find ULs revolting when used during sex. :) ###### From: slavins.at.hearsay.demon.co.uk@localhost (Simon Slavin) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Internet porn--WHY?
