BTW, it's called just 'Deja' now. I don't know why you wrote a smiley, since I find the site repulsive, especially with Lynx! They're well along the path of abandoning their original purpose -- they've cut back the archive at least once already -- and their new name and slogans don't mean anything to me. So if anyone knows of an archive for this group, or at least a better on- line news archiving service, I'd love to hear of it. Try the one I use and like: http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=q&what=news&text=yes Note that you need the &what=news to get into their Usenet engine, and &text=yes is nice to get rid of the graphical mess (even looks good in Netscape after this :-)). > (I'm still trying to > track down the article about MS' macro implementations of BASIC, which I > alleged was posted here a while ago.) I wish you well with your search. http://neil.franklin.ch/Usenet/alt.folklore.computers/ has an about 1/5th "best of" archive of a.f.c, starting 1999.12.07, one file per thread, no searching (coming RSN :-)). -- Neil Franklin, Nerd, Geek, Unix Guru, Hacker, Mystic neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ 20th century record companies fit the 21st century data highways as good as 19th century stagecoaches fit the 20th century freeways ###### Sender: eric@ruckus.brouhaha.com From: Eric Smith Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Notebooks, laptops (was DG/One laptop) References: <7hucvo$ti$1@scotsman.ed.ac.uk> <37433432.34416086@news.compuserve.com> <927165856.963762@estelle.paradise.net.nz> <37450F2C.2E674DE1@hotmail.com> X-Disclaimer: Everything I write is false. I carry my Libretto 50CT with me quite a lot. It's the Japanese model, purchased four months before US model was announced. The whole reason I had to have it was that it was a reasonably powerful computer at the time (75 MHz Pentium, 32 MB RAM) but was small enough that I didn't ever have to think about whether I wanted to lug it around with me. Several years later it is relatively underpowered (and of course Toshiba has introduced newer models with faster CPUs), but I still find it to be one of the most useful devices I've ever purchased. ###### Message-ID: <374704C8.3F70CA27@Home.Com> From: David Ness X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.08 [en] (WinNT; U) MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Notebooks, laptops (was DG/One laptop) References: <7hucvo$ti$1@scotsman.ed.ac.uk> <37433432.34416086@news.compuserve.com> <927165856.963762@estelle.paradise.net.nz> <37450F2C.2E674DE1@hotmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 23 Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 19:25:46 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 24.3.108.59 X-Complaints-To: abuse@home.net X-Trace: news.rdc1.pa.home.com 927401146 24.3.108.59 (Sat, 22 May 1999 12:25:46 PDT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 12:25:46 PDT Organization: @Home Network Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news-fra1.dfn.de!unlisys!news.snafu.de!newsfeed.ecrc.net!newshub2.home.com!news.home.com!news.rdc1.pa.home.com.POSTED!not-for-mail Eric Smith wrote: > > I carry my Libretto 50CT with me quite a lot. I had the disadvantage of getting a Libretto much later than you, but this had the corresponding advantage that it was much cheaper than I had been expecting to pay. My only `wonder' is why so many people are willing to compromise their capabilities a la WinCE, when Librettos are around that can carry 4gb+ for under $1000 and run Linux, NT, Win95, ... Of course, I still do often carry a 200Lx for `instant on' and battery life...
