Why? Because: The "original Altair" (I assume you mean un-expanded) consisted from the viewpoint of software only of an 8080 CPU and 256x8bit RAM (most likely at 0x0000-0x00FF, because the 8080 starts at 0x0000). To emulate this any 8080 or even Z80 (exa: Sinclar Spctrum) emulator will do. The standard Altair had _no_ I/O devices of any sort. They were all site dependant additions, every site different, so any emulator would have to emulate one specific Altair. On the unexpanded machine users entered code/data by an front panel while the CPU was _stopped_, then let the CPU run until hitting an HLT instruction. That stopped the processor and lit an HTL lamp. Then they used the flont panel to extract results. To emulate that style of operation any emulator for an front panel computer (exa: pdp-8) will do. > and if so, where can I can hold of it? My links-to-do file has following pdp-8 stuff/emulators in it: A copy of this FAQ(and other things) can be found at
pdp8 emulator in java
pdp8 emulator
I have not been there yet, so wether they emulate front panels I do not know. > Sorry if > this is the wrong NG to post to, but I thought if anyone knew, you guys > might. Just the binary. But the emulator does work. And this written by a Microsoft employee! MFLang, a budding Unix and VMS guru.
