I'm looking to buy a computer for when I go back to college. I'm looking for something that will last me a long time and is not too expensive. I am looking to spend no more than $1500 Canadian for the whole computer, without a printer. I really don't know that much about computers (it all sounds like a foreign language to me) and I want to make sure I get the best for my money. I was told that I should get one with a Pentium II300. Where could I find one like that for the amount that I'm willing to pay? I would appreciate any help that would come this way. I don't have an email address, I'm just at an Internet cafe using their computers, so could your reply's please be posted in this news group?! Thank you in advance for your help!! ###### Path: ccw.ch!usenet From: Neil Franklin Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: HELP! Can someone help me buy a computer?? I am looking to spend no more than $1500 Canadian ...and low cost. You have come to the right place here. I just 3 weeks ago got myself annother computer (my sixth). A fast processor (VAXstation 3100), good memory (24MB), fast disks (dual SCSI adapters with 100+600MB), tape backup (TK50), accellerated graphics (SPX), large screen (20" Trinitron), robust operating system (VMS 5.5-1). Time proven (8 years old) and future proof (else it would not have lasted so long). I got it for SFr 500.- (ca US-$ 350.-, I don't know what that is in Can-$). The trick to get so much bang-for-the-buck: buy second hand! Others in this group know this great trick, sure some of them will also share their success stories. > the best for my money. No one rationally needs that power (nor the large bill it comes with). My new aquisition was previously used by an airline (Swissair :-)) for engineering and computer graphics. > Where could I find one like that for the amount that > I'm willing to pay? Good sources are: businesses, universities and freaks getting rid of stuff that is not "sexy" to them (i.e. doesn't run the latest Microsoft bloat&bug software). Sources to avoid: computer salesmen who want to get rich off of you. > I would appreciate any help that would come this way. > I don't have an email address, I'm just at an Internet cafe using their > computers, so could your reply's please be posted in this news group?! You should also consider putting Linux on it as at least a second, if not the primary, OS because: 1) It will stay in working order for longer than your course takes. 2) A lot of academic computing uses Un*x of one sort or another 3) It is incredibly cheap to own. -- I am Robert Billing, Christian, inventor, traveller, cook and animal lover, I live near 0:46W 51:22N. http://www.tnglwood.demon.co.uk/ "Bother," said Pooh, "Eeyore, ready two photon torpedoes and lock phasers on the Heffalump, Piglet, meet me in transporter room three" ###### From: shokwave@well.com (Rob Hafernik) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: HELP! If for some reason (such as compatability with someone else), you NEED to run Windows, then you'll need a Windows box. For Windows boxes, there are plenty of cheap mail-order places and some really cheap "factory outlet" stores that sell re-worked returns (you often get what you pay for, however). If you don't know a thing about computers, you'd better get one with everything pre-installed, because getting a new Windows box all set up and working from scratch can be challenging. If you're getting a Windows box, get at least 32 megabytes of RAM and at least a 200mhz CPU. A large hard drive (say 8 gig) is nice, but you'll probably be able to get on fine with 4 gig for a good while in an acedemic setting. If you're a novice and don't have any compelling reason to use Windows, you might try a Mac. They're a LOT easier to set up and maintain and there will be less "foreign language" stuff to deal with. The new iMac runs about $1300 and is targeted at students. Everything is pre-installed and a seven-year-old can set one up in about 5 minutes. If you think you might enjoy learning about computers and want a system that you can customize and tinker with and really GRASP, then you might want to run Linux. It's not really an OS for beginners, but it's certainly not beyond the grasp of a normally intelligent person, so long as you take the time to learn it. The advantage of Linux is that it's free and you'll be beholding to NO Fortune 500 company (and this is no small advantage). You might see what systems your school bookstore sells. A lot of times they have educational discounts and offer service after the sale (so you have somewhere to go if you have problems). ###### From: "Harrison Community Acces Site" Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers References: <905276076.610623@neptune.uniserve.ca> Subject: Re: HELP! I have another quick question. I have seen both EDO and SDRAM, what is the difference, and what should I go with. I'm kinda steering towards a new computer because I would like to have a warranty with it. Most of them I have found have a 2 year system warranty with them. Is that the norm?? Thanks so much again. It is nice to know that there are people out there who are willing to help. Harrison Community Acces Site wrote in message <905276076.610623@neptune.uniserve.ca>... >Hello.
