I think the oldest quantum atlas-II drives we use have been news spool drives for over 2 years. What are you complaining about. You could have a drive that was really worth complaining about, the early seagates (promised 40000 hours MTBF actual about 3 months) before they bought out CDC and eventually learnt how to build a drive that worked, Kaloks and the the drives that I fell in love with. Samsung. Their early 120MB drives promised the same MTBF as the Quantums, Connors, IBMs (250000 hours) of the time but in one batch of 100 that we got 10% would not and could not work out of the box. Another 40% needed serious persuasion to work at all. The remainder systematically failed catastrophically over the next year. The top half of it was coming away, which was a new form of drive failure for me. Steer well clear of them... On the same note we had 6 HP PC's arrive which we were to customise... If an auto salesman said "don't worry about the details, you'll probably buy a new car within 5 years anyway", I'd be running away. All of the drives I've used, I've used for over 2 years (except the ones that died). And they've all been big enough. Reliability and speed is much more important to me than size (I have 2gigs, with no plans on increasing it anytime soon). Of course, it is computer builders who do all the "memory is cheap, disk is cheap" mantra, knowing that it is usually they who end up being paid to do the upgrade. And a computer builder that implies the two levels of quality are home use and military spec is a builder to avoid. That sort of thinking has taken computers out of the high tech world, and turned them into low tech low quality appliances. (Hmm, if I had scsi, I'd much rather *add* a new smallish drive than upgrade an existing one to a larger drive (meaning I have to migrate everything over, what a nightmare). With IDE, you're stuck with only 2 drives (unless you want to slave them and screw up performance), so the temptation is to make them larger. But that's just me) Hey, that's exactly what I'm doing. I am sitting in front of a PPro 200, running a Quantum Atlas XP32150 (2Gig) as system drive, an IBM DFRSS4F for most of the data, and 4 _old_ workstation SCSI discs linked together as a raid array. They are: Two Fujitsu M2266S-512, one Fujitsu M2263S-512 and one IBM 0661467. They may not be the fastest, but they are about 7 years old, running 7/24. And they took heavy pounding in their time as workstation disks (Calculations running for weeks with big scratch files...). Don't talk to me about upgrading my computer every two years yadda, yadda. And I'm not running Win95 either... kga -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Klaus-Georg Adams Email: Klaus-Georg.Adams@chemie.uni-karlsruhe.de Institut f. And where exactly is your rubbish? It might be nice to be there ahead of the garbage truck :-) > Salve them, screw up performance? ,not if you know what your doing ,IDE > has a max of 8 drives. 8? Who says I was running Win95? Yeah, I've got it, but just for games. I mean, if I buy a big drive, first things I do is partition it; but if each partition were a separate drive, they could all be running in parallel. -- Darin Johnson darin@usa.net.delete_me ###### Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!feed1.news.luth.se!luth.se!masternews.telia.net!cpk-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!cam-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!news.bbnplanet.com!nntprelay.mathworks.com!newsfeed1.earthlink.net!newsfeed.concentric.net!news.mel.aone.net.au!newsfeed-in.aone.net.au!news.mel.connect.com.au!news.syd.connect.com.au!not-for-mail From: Alecto Newsgroups: alt.computer.workshop,alt.computer.workshop.live,alt.computerlink.online,alt.education.industry.comp,alt.fan.dean-stark.comp.lang.forth,alt.folklore.computer,alt.folklore.computers,alt.help.with.homework.compsci,alt.incompetence.phil-oliver,alt.industrial.computing Subject: Re: Quantum Hard Drives Date: Fri, 05 Jun 1998 23:20:20 +1000 Organization: Customer of Connect.com.au P/L, Sydney, Australia Lines: 11 Message-ID: <3577F094.1536@goulburn.net.au> References: <356caf1d.7777443@207.126.101.81> <356E0103.6558@abc.gov.au> <3573d786.4832480@news.metronet.co.uk> <3574FDD0.68E9@goulburn.net.au> <35757895.583641812@207.126.101.81> <3575E4B3.4B84@goulburn.net.au> <35774448.17AD@goulburn.net.au> <35778EC0.680C@olywa.net> Reply-To: alecto@goulburn.net.au NNTP-Posting-Host: ppp001.goulburn.net.au Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.04 (Win95; I) > Dear Alacto: I would be extremely interested in learning howto run > more than 4 IDE drives on a system. Pleaseanswer here and/or via > e-mail. Thanks; R. Baer Ok,the IBM can support up to 4 ide interfaces ,and each interface can have 2 drives attached to it(master/slave) ,this gives a max of 8 drives. How to have 4 ide interfaces? - use a pci motherboard with 2 interfaces on it and plug a dual IDE pci card in as well.
