It's available in big direct images and in smaller Postscript generated by much-edited OCR. I'll do HTML if I can find a good enough converter from .doc. This was for the PDP-11/20 version of Unix. 24KB memory, no memory management. It's under my home page, http://www.cs.bell-labs.com/~dmr along with other historical stuff like the B manuals, a history of QED, and the Seventh Edition manual (the latter only in troff, but including all the papers as well as man pages). If one just had the perspective when young to know what to save and what to rightfully throw out we'd have many more old documents exhibit today. Word 97 can do .doc to HTML conversion by simply doing a File/Save as HTML operation, but I'm not sure about the quality of the results. - Larry Weiss ###### From: engel@numerik.math.uni-siegen.de Subject: Re: Old Unix manual on WWW Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers References: <354EA06D.781@bell-labs.com> User-Agent: tin/pre-1.4-980202 (UNIX) (SunOS/5.5.1 (sun4u)) NNTP-Posting-Host: jordan.numerik.math.uni-siegen.de Message-ID: <35504c75.0@rainbow.hrz.uni-siegen.de> Date: 6 May 98 11:41:41 GMT Lines: 20 Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news.maxwell.syr.edu!fci-se!fci!news.ruhrgebiet.individual.net!news-koe1.dfn.de!RRZ.Uni-Koeln.DE!rainbow.hrz.uni-siegen.de!not-for-mail Dennis Ritchie wrote: : I recently scanned in the First Edition of the Unix : manual, from 3 November 1971. Last time I tried it, the result was enormous, the formatting was a mess, and it included a lot of "illegal" HTML (in the sense that attributes overlapped in many places instead of being nested). I'd never try it again. A pity, because it would have been useful. -- Pete Peter Turnbull Dept. of Computer Science [remove indy. from email address to reply] University of York ###### Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.belnet.be!news-penn.gip.net!news-dc.gip.net!news-peer.gip.net!news.gsl.net!gip.net!newsfeed.internetmci.com!202.14.100.1!status.gen.nz!kcbbs!riplin Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Old Unix manual on WWW From: riplin@kcbbs.gen.nz (Richard Plinston) Date: 10 May 98 02:10:26 GMT Message-ID: <3298129.7826.22775@kcbbs.gen.nz> References: <02BE20340D5BD5D9.39C4BED115CBB031.2BD637065908CF7E@library- Organization: Kappa Crucis Unix BBS, Auckland, New Zealand Lines: 21 In message <<02BE20340D5BD5D9.39C4BED115CBB031.2BD637065908CF7E@library-> Larry Weiss writes: > > I recently scanned in the First Edition of the Unix > > manual, from 3 November 1971. Dennis Ritchie using Word 97 on Windows NT ? I sincerely hope not. Next he will be doing all his programming in VB5. ###### From: martini@heaven7.snafu.de (Martin Ibert) Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: Old Unix manual on WWW Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 07:31:09 GMT Organization: The Seventh Heaven, Berlin, Germany Lines: 15 Message-ID: <35afac1d.134352137@news.sky.bln.sub.org> References: <3298129.7826.22775@kcbbs.gen.nz> NNTP-Posting-Host: arezzo.sky.bln.sub.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 1.5/32.451 Path: ccw.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.belnet.be!newspump.monmouth.com!newspeer.monmouth.com!newsfeed.nacamar.de!wuff.mayn.de!unlisys!news.snafu.de!heaven7.snafu.de!news On 10 May 98 02:10:26 GMT, riplin@kcbbs.gen.nz (Richard Plinston) wrote: > Dennis Ritchie using Word 97 on Windows NT ? > >I sincerely hope not. > >Next he will be doing all his programming in VB5.
