That was sorta handy also. There are quite a few editors that can do that. Winword 1.1, the best (O.K. least bad) version, did this when one selected with the right mouse button. In 2.0 this was sacrificed for the context menues. I never used that often enough to bother finding out where they had shifted it to (of if this feature was dropped). Unix editor vim (www.vim.org) does this with Ctrl-v, move cursor, d. And yes this is nifty when editing tables. BTW: I once told a secretary of this feature, she nearly freaked. I then found out that she had just spent a whole day cut-and-pasting each single line of a large table. -- private: Neil.Franklin.remove@ccw.ch http://www.ccw.ch/Neil.Franklin/ office: franklin.remove@arch.ethz.ch http://caad.arch.ethz.ch/~franklin/ This computer has 2 cats, one in /bin, one on top purring. ###### Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!nntprelay.mathworks.com!newsfeed.internetmci.com!209.94.128.13!news.javanet.com!not-for-mail From: perfecto@ct2.nai.net (Perry.Fecteau@Republican.COM) Newsgroups: rec.org.mensa,seattle.general,alt.fan.bill-gates,comp.misc,alt.folklore.computers,alt.destroy.microsoft Subject: Re: WP features (was: The Microsoft Cult with Guru Bill Gates) Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 02:23:40 GMT Organization: Milhouse America Lines: 14 Message-ID: <3547a61d.116935143@news.nai.net> References: <6gihsl$2ks@bgtnsc03.worldnet.att.net> <352CE00D.19DFC308@stevens-tech.edu> <6gj3vg$2c3$1@news.skylink.net> <6gmel3$sdp$1@news.skylink.net> <3531ba7f.10634581@news.nabi.net> <3541a49d.17885225@news.supernews.com> <353C02A4.1CB5C5BE@mpinet.net> <6hhet0$bel$4@newshost.comnet.co.nz> <353D1338.54D026BB@mpinet.net> <353D1FE7.AC8@anet-stl.com> <01bd6df0$dc9e1c50$0ba17392@glastonbury> <6hl49r$ace$2@trog.dra.hmg.gb> NNTP-Posting-Host: ct-hartford-us313.javanet.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 1.5/32.451 On 22 Apr 1998 16:02:03 GMT, wagray@taz.dra.hmg.gb (Walter Gray) wrote: >WP for windows allows you to search for codes. I was using it at work, but it's been a few years and I don't recall what I was doing. Probably something like the secetary Alan Sargent mentioned. I've also generated lists by doing (DOS) "DIR >> LIST.TXT" and then editing the file. If you want (for instance) the dates of the items in the list, but not the file sizes, it's pretty useful. I've since written a little program that will read the file and strip out what I don't want. -- Jim Everman mailto:everman@Anet-STL.com http://webusers.Anet-STL.com/~everman/ Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity. ###### Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.belnet.be!newspump.monmouth.com!newspeer.monmouth.com!howland.erols.net!math.ohio-state.edu!news.cis.ohio-state.edu!opus.anet-stl.com!not-for-mail From: Jim Everman Newsgroups: rec.org.mensa,seattle.general,alt.fan.bill-gates,comp.misc,alt.folklore.computers,alt.destroy.microsoft Subject: Re: WP features (was: The Microsoft Cult with Guru Bill Gates) Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 12:59:43 -0500 Organization: Very good. I've been looking for this feature without success in Word's Help files for 2 years now, and all I could do was import the text from Word into Excel, convert text to columns, delete columns, and export back to Word. Not fun. Now that I know how to do it (BTW, the key on Win is ALT) I will look through M$oft's lousy help files and see if I can find the documentation on this. Here's some ASCII art for ya: OK - what you sent looks good, but only because I have the Netscape options set to "fixed width font". If I change it to "variable width font", it looks like crap. Using Wordperfect with Windows, I don't have the choice (or if I do, I don't know it). Since all the printing is handled by windows, all I have avalible are variable width fonts. I'm certainly willing to admit to being ignorant if it comes to that - I'd just like to be able to print those ASCII files like I could before this wonderful, new and improved windows crap entered my life. Yea, I could load up an old version of Wordperfect and run it in DOS - I suspect WP 3.? that I have for this XT beside me would work just fine, but that's not the answer I'm looking for. BTW, many moons ago (circa 1950's) my sister was a TTY operator. They use to spend *lots* of time making ASCII pictures to send to other operators. It really was an art form. Somewhere in my archives I have at least one DOS program that is an aid to making ASCII art. Back up the WP.DRS that came with WordPerfect, and then copy the WP.DRS that came with DrawPerfect to the directory where WordPerfect expects to find WP.DRS. This lets WordPerfect print all the fonts in all your DrawPerfect WPG files. It won't help with display or printing of straight word-processor text in WordPerfect, though, and I think the object was to do something with ASCII art in WordPerfect files. If I change it to "variable width >> font", it looks like crap. Using Wordperfect with Windows, I don't >> have the choice (or if I do, I don't know it). Since all the printing >> is handled by windows, all I have avalible are variable width fonts. > >You don't have Courier? MS has also recently made a new monospaced >font, "monotype.com" available for download. Or look at your Netscape >options and see what font it uses for "fixed width". I'd like to point out that, AFAIK, the Courier and Courier New that are standard in Windows these days are NOT really fixed width, monospaced fonts, though they are much closer than the typical variable width proportional fonts which are now common. So Courier is best for ASCII art, but still does not render it as originally designed in all cases. I'm glad to see MS has finally corrected this discrepancy by releasing a true monospaced typeface. -- T. I do know though that this feature was *not* present in MS Word for Mac versions 3.0 through 5.0 but was indeed introduced in version 5.1 and is also included in version 6.0. Early in 1989 the lone Dos machine got Word 5.0 for DOS, he could have got 2.0 for Windows, but we reckoned dos would be easier and faster as the box was only being used for a typewriter. My records show we got 5.0 for Mac in January '91, but that was a multi-user licence which may have been to regularise an oversight as to how many users... In mid-93 we got a Quadra 800 and had to upgrade our Word4 to 4.00e to overcome the cache switch problem. I don't have a Word 4.00a handy right here to check, but we have never upgraded to 5.1, and both the 5.0a and 4.00e do have the Option-drag feature. -- Peter Kerr bodger School of Music chandler University of Auckland NZ neo-Luddite
