It's an article to appear in next months iX magazine, the largest german Unix magazine. I quote it in german, I append the english translation (translation by me, without warranty). I guess it is quite interesting. Translation: "Microsoft already announced weeks ago that future releases of the Windows operating system will not be based on the well known MS-DOS any longer. A month ago Bill Gates himself revealed surprising details on an up to now top-secret conference: It is planned to use the kernel of the nowadays wide spread free Unix clone 'Linux' in the desktop market. Main developer Linus Torvalds has been won as a coworker for this project, Gates said. Behind closed doors it is intensely being worked on extending the kernel with the well-known Plug&Play functionality of Windows 95 and enhanced multimedia capabilities. It has been learned from Windows NT that a solid kernel be essential for the stability of the operating system. The Linux kernel fulfills this to a great extent, Gates emphasized. Just as in NT the new Windows will offer a POSIX subsystem, but apart from that a complete port of the Windows API is considered most important. The multi user capability will completely be hidden under the user interface. It applications that count on the desktop, here it is planned to profit from the market leading position of Microsoft. The future of 'Linux' as a freely available operating system seems questionable. The 'Gnu Public License' (GPL), which applies to Linux up to know, will not be violated. But the new extensions made by Microsoft will not be covered by the GPL. The rights for the name 'Linux' are now with Microsoft. Insider see a connection to the joint-venture of Intel with HP. If Windows is supposed to run on new Intel-HP-Risc processors, a solid, portable basis is indispensable. Reactions of know Linux distributors are at variance. While RedHat announced to rely on FreeBSD in the future, german distributor S.u.S.E is planning to develop an operating system called "Susix", which is based on the newest free Linux version."
