Reminds me of the early days of micros, when on a typical day I'd have to use the UCSD editor (had modes, ^C to end a mode, esc to toss inserted data), VMS edit/edt (too horrible to recall), RT-11 EDIT (also horrible, ^C killed program?), RT-11 TECO (intriguing but frustrating, ESC to end a mode), RT-11 TECO + screen editor layer (too slow), MINCE (emacs-like, lots of ^X-ing), PDP-8 EDIT (passable, ^L to end modes). A lot of editing had to be redone when I'd press ^C to get out of insert mode (ala UCSD) and I actually was sitting in front of the PDP-8 (^C tossed edits). There's something to be said for the Wintel golden handcuffs-- at least it cuts down on the variety of editor flavors. ###### From: Ian Stirling <000034D07837.NO_UCE@mauve.demon.co.uk> Newsgroups: alt.folklore.computers Subject: Re: YKYBHTLW Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 12:38:15 GMT Organization: None. When I was studying psychology I asked a professor about this. After successfully getting him hooked on the game by putting a copy on his laptop, he eventually hunted me down and told me that a combination of the simplicity of possible options and the regularity of the movements was a powerful hypnotic.
