The scale compression is logarithmic, 2 is at 0.3010 of the scale length, 5 is at 0.6990 etc. You can find these values using a scientific calculator or by reference to Logarithm Tables!. It started off as a 1:1 copy of an old pocket slide rule I got as a present some time ago, about 130 chars wide. I shrunk it to 96 chars first, then to 68 (Darling, I shrunk the slide rule!) Literally thousands of models, doesens of manufacturers. Just go to e-bay and type "slide rule" in search box. I was amazed when I first did this. I must admit that most of people caring about slide rules are retired engineers who collect them. If we do some math we will obtain some paradoxical result: though "they" stopped to teach slide rules in schools 15 years before then "we" did (I studied slide rule in 1986 and I believe that early 1970s -- the years of the first cheap calculators were pretty much the end of slide rule era in the west), but taking in account 20-30 years difference in life expectancy -- the last people on earth who studied them will be americans.
