Part three of a tutorial. Do you remember the castle from our first exercise? If not, you either didn't read it, or it was completely forgetable. In either case... Let's take a look into another area of manipulating text-art: perspective. Not just adding a little depth perception, like we did by inserting a line to create a horizon, but real angle-of-view. What if we were looking at that castle we made, from an angle? Adding perspective can get a little more complicated. Still, we won't really be using any characters we didn't use to make this castle; we're just going to add more of them, and in some different places. Take a peek at this to see what I mean: |>>>> _|_ / \ \ / \ \ / \ \ /_______\/| _ _ _|__|_|__| |_ _ _ _ _ | |_| |_| |_| |_| | |_| |_| |_| |_|/| /|/ |_|___|_| | | | | |__|__|_| | /|/ | _/|/_ _ _ _|_|__|__| |_ _ __ | | | |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| ||/ | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|_| / |_|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| / |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|_| / ||__|__|__|__|__| ...|_|__|__|__|__|__| / |__|__|__|__|__|." | "._|__|__|__|__|_| / |_|__|__|__|__||| | ||__|__|__|__|__| / ||__|__|__|__|_|| | ||_|__|__|__|__|| / |__|__|__|__|__||__|__||__|__|__|__|__|/ Now the thing has some added dimension, doesn't it? The first thing I did was to lay out the side wall on the right, and then the "inside" wall on the left. Next, I moved the tower over to the right enough to fit correctly with our angle-of-view. I added the tower's side, just like I did the right exterior wall. The last elements I added were the roof, and the "rear" wall of the castle. As you can see, the rear wall is made the same way the top of the front wall was, taking care to "fit" it in between the new side walls. You may notice that this perspective isn't perfect. It's not. But it's simple to do, using the same characters that were in the original picture. As the picture progresses, I think you will see that the shortcomings of this view aren't quite as serious as they seem from this first layout. Let's try bricking it in, to see what happens... |>>>> _|_ / \ \ / \ \ / \ \ /_______\/| __ _ _|__|_|__|/|_ _ _ _ _ || |_| |_| |_| |_||| |_| |_| |_| |_|/| /|/|__|__|__ |_|___|_|/| __|__|__|__|_ ||| |/|||__|__|_ |__|__|_|/| |__|__|__|_ /|/|| _/|/_/| _ _ _|_|__|__|/|_ _ __ |/|/|| | |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| ||/|/|/|| |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|_|/|/|/|// |_|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|/|/|/|/ |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|_||/|/|/ |_|__|__|__|__|__|...|_|__|__|__|__|__|/|/|/ |__|__|__|__|__|." | "._|__|__|__|__|_||/|/ |_|__|__|__|__||| | ||__|__|__|__|__|/|/ ||__|__|__|__|_|| | ||_|__|__|__|__|||/ |__|__|__|__|__||__|__||__|__|__|__|__|/ That's as far as we can take the bricking-in of the back and inside wall we have added, without cluttering the picture to the point that it will run together into a total mess. As you can see, the imperfections of this picture are becoming less apparent than they were in our outline. Now, let's add our other elements back into the picture, placing them where they would appear consistent with our new view... ________ __ _( ( __ )_ _(( )_ __( __ ) __) __( ) ) (____ ( _) (_ ( _ __ )_ (_____) _( __ __) (__(_ ( _) (___) |>>> _|_ /\ / \ \ __ //\\ _______________ / \ \ ________________________________ ///\\\ / \ \ ////\\\\ /_______\/| /////\\\\\ __ _ _|__|_|__|/|_ _ _ _ _ || || |_| |_| |_| |_||| |_| |_| |_| |_|/| /|/|__|__|__ |_|___|_|/| __|__|__|__|_ |/|@@@@@ |/|||__|__|_ |__|__|_|/| |__|__|__|_ /|/|@@@@@@@ _/|/_/| _ _ _|_|__|__|/|_ _ __ |/|/@@@@@@@@@ | |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| ||/|/|/@@@@@@@@@@ |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|_|/|/|/|/@@@@@@@ |_|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|/|/|/|/ | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|_||/|/|/% | %| % |_|__|__|__|__|__|...|_|__|__|__|__|__|/|/|/\|/ \|/\|/ |__|__|__|__|__|." | "._|__|__|__|__|_||/|/o @ @|_|__|__|__|__||| | ||__|__|__|__|__|/|/r \|/\|||_@|_@|_@|__|__| | ||_|__|__%|_%_|%||/j |_\|/\|/\|/_|__||__|__||__|__|\|/\|/\|/ @ @ @ .' .' % % % \|/\|/\|/ .' .' \|/\|/\|/ .' .' .' .' .' .' .' It's not TOO bad, but still... I think you'll have to agree that it's not nearly as good as the one above it. Throwing some viewing angle into that picture, really made it work a lot better. Look at these kids. What do you think they would look like, if their living room was flat?... " OL' YELLER WAS A DAWG, AH OL' YELLER DAWG!! It did lose a lot, didn't it? Now, you can't really tell what that television is. It looks more like a box than a TV, and the couch looks so "boxy", that only the big kid's feet stretching out give you the impression that it isn't just some sort of background. Adding perspective isn't always necessary. Our castle looked fine without it. There may be times when you will want to use it, however. You will also find pictures that won't work at all, without a little perspective. It can sometimes get tricky to add, but that will only make your text-art appear all the more clever. Let's see how we can make a decent little house, with some perspective to it: | _____ ____ _____ | ||__|__| || || |__|__|| <-- basic house. ||__|__| || o|| |__|__|| |________||__||_________| | | _____ ____ _____ | | ||__|__| || || |__|__|| | <-- add the side wall... ||__|__| || o|| |__|__|| / |________||__||_________|/ _ ____|_|__________________ / /\ <---- roof the sucker, using / / \ /'s to angle the roof. /________________________/ | | _____ ____ _____ | | ||__|__| || || |__|__|| | ||__|__| || o|| |__|__|| / |________||__||_________|/ Now, that's a pretty acceptable-looking little house. We can go back and shingle the roof though, and make it a bit more attractive... _ ____|_|__________________ /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_//\ <--- nothing but .//_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ \ _'s and /'s; /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_// | /_/_/ see? | _____ ____ _____ | | ||__|__| || || |__|__|| | ||__|__| || o|| |__|__|| / |________||__||_________|/ The last trick we might try is to 3D the chimney to match the rest of the house, and while we're at it, let's add a side window, like this.... __ ____|_||_________________ /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_//\ .//_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ \ /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_///|| | _____ ____ _____ |||| ||__|__| || || |__|__|||/| ||__|__| || o|| |__|__|| / |________||__||_________|/ Okay, the side window isn't perfect, but it will pass for one, won't it? You could now take your house, and make a complete picture with the thing, adding a background and foreground, as in the castle above. Whenever you make an ascii that looks a little flat, or too dull, try throwing a little perspective into it. What you thought was going to turn into a boring picture, just might end up being an interesting artwork that you will want to share with others! /) __.
