Up to about 5 years ago ASCII was allways treated as fixed-width, the way it was defined to be over 50 years ago. Then the web and HTML came and people saw proportional fonts on the net. This lead to three things: - HTML Mails (which are properly displayed proportionally and can contain font information (only used by newer browsers !!!), and GIF/JPG pictures just like HTML web pages) - Mailers that can optionally display ASCII mails in proportional font, if the user prefers this and has no desire for ASCII art - one particular braindead Mailer (Outfuck Express) by an "couldn't care for anyone else" Firm (Microsoft), that defaults to proportional Quote Bill Gates: why would anyone today want to sent graphics via ASCII, when they can use Powerpoint? The last step screwed up ASCII email/news for all of us, worldwide, even those with zero Microsoft software, permanently. P.S: those damn RE: AW: AV: VS: ... messes are courtesy of the same idiots. Again somthing working destroyed by one stroke of "genius". Don't you like firms that do that? The used font is not recorded in the email (unless it is a HTML mail). This is because 25 years ago all computers displayed only fixed width fonts (character terminals, teletypes, etc). For Outlook (Express) is a program from MicroSoft - and those tend to be more clever than you; which they usually fail on. Either use a "real newsreader/MUA" (tm) or tell your Outlook to send plain-text _only_. You can do that in the Options: Extra -> Options -> E-Mail-Format -> Send in Format -> Plain Text (I hope that it's called something similar to this - I only have the german version available here...). Oh, and btw., Peter was only refering to that this is an english_language_ group - so you should write in english that we all can understand you. This is an alt-group, so there aren't any rules on the matter, other than it would be _practical_ to write in language that as many readers as possible understand. Occationally I see discussions in French, German, Spanish in some groups (not that much in this group) and those who understand them, understand them.
