Neither VT100 nor ANSI has anything to do with ASCII. VT100, ANSI, XTERM and others are standards which define special-chars, such as "highlight", "italics", cursor-moves etc. ASCII is a character-set, like iso-latin1, ibm-codepage 850 etc. ASCII is a character-set which is pure 7-bit clean and contains no control-characters (as 0x07 "Bell" or so). VTxx0 and ANSI are terminal control sequences, not characters at all. Equally PC-473 (often miss-called ANSI or DOS) and ISO-8859-x and ISO-10646-UTF-8 are expanded character sets with 128-255 and as such are not wellcome, because many newsreaders and file viewers do not understand them. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ ###### From: Ilmari Karonen Newsgroups: alt.ascii-art Subject: Re: a list of ascii codes in hex binary and plain language Date: 2 Jan 2000 13:10:21 GMT Organization: (dis)Order of the Holy Spoon (or whatever) Lines: 26 Distribution: world Message-ID: <84nint$pa9$1@tron.sci.fi> References: <83cegf$oi4$1@supernews.com> <385fb17e.7273575@news.vossnet.net> <6ud7rpok8f.fsf@chonsp.franklin.ch> NNTP-Posting-Host: joshua.saunalahti.fi User-Agent: postit.pl 0.03 Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!feed2.news.luth.se!luth.se!news-peer-europe.sprintlink.net!news.sprintlink.net!newsfeed1.swip.net!swipnet!newsfeed3.funet.fi!newsfeed1.funet.fi!nntp.inet.fi!inet.fi!newsfeeds.saunalahti.fi!news.sci.fi!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.ascii-art:7215 On 29 Dec 1999 16:11:12 +0100, Neil Franklin (neil@franklin.ch.remove) wrote: : 0-127 are the only true ASCII (as defined in ISO-646). : But 32-126 are considered the _subset_ of ASCII usable for art, : because too many newsreaders and file viewers can not handle the : 0-31 and 127 properly. Just to pick one more nit, codes 32-126 are the *printable* ASCII characters. ASCII art uses those, as well as the characters 10 and 13 (depending on local conventions) for line breaks. An ascii picture is a matrix of printable ASCII characters, usually stored and transmitted as lines of plain ASCII text separated by line breaks (CR, LF or CR/LF). An ascii animation is a sequence of ascii pictures shown at regular intervals to simulate motion. While these have been traditionally separated by ASCII Form Feed characters, many other storage and display conventions exist today.
