YM ANSI art...

Ascii-art is available in a grand total of two colours:
black
white

ANSI art uses a bunch of ANSI codes to add colour to the image, although
in the process makes it illegible for any mail program/text editor that
can't decipher ANSI codes...

OTOH you could opt for the HTML 'cheat' (ie. wrapping lots of <span
style="font-color: #ffddaa"> </span> or the depricated <font
color="#ffddaa"> </font> around the art), which is also indecipherable
on mail programs/text editors that can't parse HTML (although with HTML
it's marginally easier to extract the 'raw' ascii image...if you've got
a decent cut/paste function).


As multicoloured text art is off-topic in this group, don't expect any
coloured images to be posted here. However, it is perfectly possible for
you to take a 'raw' image from this group and then 'wrap' colour tags
around it (just make sure you still keep the original artist's signature
on the image!)

Erm. Wrong.

ASCII comes in 2 colors:
- foreground
- background

ASCII does not specify what they are.
On paper (Teletype!) usually the back is white, fore is gray.
On screen usually one of those is black, the other tends to often
be white, green or amber.

On the terminal I am writing this on it is fore=green, back=black.
Yes, I hate the black on white "paper emulation" stuff. Screens are not
paper! (ever screwed one up and thrown it in the waste screen basket?)

And yes, on such a setup the Web (and HTML mails/posts) can be a pain
in the ass (when they force back=white and leave fore undefined).


But wait ... ASCII has _3_ colors!

There also exists doublestrike (<char> <BS> <char>). That displays
here as yellow (overlighted green).

Then there is underlined (_ <BS> <char>). That displays light green
(and not underlined) here. Adjustable terminals are fun. :-)

The late Colin Douthwaite (who was a frequent poster to aaa) would have
been having apoplectic fits about your test. He regularly posted an
article stating that one should ONLY use characters 32-126 in the
newsgroups.

And surprise! My old crappy Newsreader actually rendered them correctly!

Yes, I am highly surprised at that. I after all constructed them by
hacking directly the news server spool file.

My newsreader and newsserver survived it. Anyone had it go wrong? What
did it look like?

What did the control codes look like? Do I properly interpret that as
little boxes?

Well <BS> is standard, ASCII char 8, but its interpretation by
newsreaders is most likely non-standard, at least among all these
newfangled browser based ones (and perhaps others also).

Hokay... So, I tried your colored-ascii trick. It works, swell, but
this picture has nothing to do with marijuana. It's Bambi, fleeing
across an open glen, wind swaying the grass, as a rabid herd of
marabunta mice race in pursuit. GREAT pix... but no pot.

Same here with pine (tons of Ctrl-H's)...besides, the only way I can
usually display those things formatted is to cat 'em to stdout - most
text editors I've used will display the codes rather than parse 'em.

As Llizard effectively said, only use chars 32-126 in your posts (for
the uninitiated, those are also the only chars you can use in your ascii
art...).

Meanwhile, slightly off-topic, but new revisions to my website...got rid
of the pesky <code>&nbsp;</code> stuff on the banners (remembered why I
did it now - tried <pre> </pre> before but it appeared in the
yellowey-orange on black - stupid me temporarily forgot the ability of
css to define multiple styles for the same tag - really stupid since
it's precisely that ability that produced the multi-coloured footer
banner table!) and also added a couple of new pages, including my
asciichars chart (predictably sitting at asciichars.html)...

Actually those revisions were great at proving the power of gvim...I'd
like to see the day when M$ Text Manglers can complete a
nice large 'search/replace all' operation in <1s...being able to enter
the command+search text+replace text in the same command line is also a
boon :)
