In Courier and C.-New they just look like a pile of J's and F's like Henry mentions. Maybe the serifs are distracting... They make one's eyes focus on the character instead of on the form. Or there's as much stress on the horizontal as on the vertical lines. Blabla... whatever... Anyway, I thought Henry was aiming at this "effect" (the one in the middle): ### # ### # # ### # # ### # # ### # # ### # # # ### ##" #### ### ##### #### ### # # ### # # ### ### # ### # # ### # # ### ### # ### > > Same thing with VK's lines... > > > > I use 3 OS's: Linux, Mac and Windows, and tried several fonts > > (all "fixed-width" of course). > > I use "9x15". This is a font 9 pixels wide, 15 pixels high, right? Actually I wanted to address a different "problem". But your set of lines isn't a good showcase to present it. So please ignore my earlier comments. I'll try to write it down when I have more time... :( Anyway, thanks for explaining. cya, ') mic at dataweb dot nl ###### From: sjoh0780@sable.ox.ac.uk (Henry Segerman) Newsgroups: alt.ascii-art Subject: Re: Need help! Does anyone know how to specify the font used inside PRE tags in html? My page is in courier when I look at it, which is perhaps not the best choice...it'd be far better in Monaco... -- -- ,-, Henry Segerman |/ |.--, /\ | /|/\,--, , /| | \/ | / | /\ | |/ ' `--'\/|/ | \/ `--'| /| uewJ363S hJu3H `-' ###### From: Ilmari Karonen Newsgroups: alt.ascii-art Subject: Re: Need help! Older browsers that don't understand CSS will still show it in the default font, though. You could use tags, but besides certain standards compliancy issues they're also just plain ugly IMHO. -- Ilmari Karonen http://www.sci.fi/~iltzu/ ###### Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!usenet From: Neil Franklin Newsgroups: alt.ascii-art Subject: Re: Need help! As I prefer fonts with exact the double hight to width (now using 8x16) the 1/2 is exaxtly 45 degrees. > and -height... per font... per system... And yes, this is totally font (and so also system) dependant. So relying on it fails. In the olden days assuming 1/2 = 45 degrees was reliable, but today there are too many fonsts that are less high, to put more text on screen (OK, that one is irrevant for me, 1536x1152 Pixel on 21"). > Anyone have a clue/pointer/resolution? > (I remember Neil Franklin posting about pixelwidth of chars) Good memory.
