Would that be ASCII? Wouldn't that be "ENGLISH"? Does plain old english fit for ascii? Would that be ASCII? no, not really. The American Standard Code of Information Interchange didn't exist until after computers were present. The history section at my site tries to go back to identify various forms of 'text art' which obviously was the precursor to ASCII art. BTW, just today I received a copy of Alan Riddell's book, "Typewriter Art" -- what a book! It shows the first dated typewriter art -- in 1898! There's lots more really great pictures too!
